How to Make a Bootable USB Drive Using Rufus.

Introduction

let's create a step-by-step guide for creating a bootable USB drive. In this example, I'll use the popular tool Rufus for Windows:

Requirements

- A USB drive with at least 8GB of storage.

- A computer running Windows.

- An ISO file of the operating system you want to install.

Step 1: Download Rufus

1. Go to the official Rufus website: [https://rufus.ie/](https://rufus.ie/)

2. Download the latest version of Rufus by clicking on the download link.

Step 2: Insert USB Drive

Insert your USB drive into an available USB port on your computer.

Step 3: Run Rufus

1. Locate the downloaded Rufus executable and run the application.

2. If prompted, allow Rufus to make changes to your device.

Step 4: Configure Rufus Settings

1. In the Rufus window, you'll see several settings.

2. Device: Select your USB drive from the drop-down menu.

3. Boot selection: Click on "Select" and choose the ISO file of the operating system you want to install.

Step 5: Partition Scheme and File System

1. Partition scheme: Choose the appropriate scheme. For newer systems, "MBR" is generally suitable.

2. File system: Choose "NTFS" for Windows ISOs and "FAT32" for Linux distributions.

Step 6: Volume Label and Bootable Option

1. Volume label: You can give your USB drive a name for easy identification.

2. Bootable: Ensure the "Create a bootable disk using" option is selected.

Step 7: Start the Process

1. Double-check your settings to ensure they match the requirements.

2. Click on the "Start" button. You might get a warning that all data on the USB drive will be destroyed – make sure you've backed up any important data.

Step 8: Wait for Completion

Rufus will format the USB drive and copy the contents of the ISO file to make it bootable. This process might take some time, so be patient.

Step 9: Successful Completion

Once Rufus shows "READY" at the bottom, the process is complete. You can close Rufus and safely eject the USB drive from your computer.

Step 10: Test the Bootable USB Drive

Before using the bootable USB for installation, restart your computer and enter the boot menu. Select the USB drive to ensure it boots correctly.

Conclusion

As you can see, it is pretty easy to create a bootable USB drive using Rufus. No matter how complicated the operating system/software edition is, Rufus will convert it into a usable drive, provided the drive has enough space.
